In the virtual chats, use of Facebook emoticons has become the most preferred substitute for all kinds of body language especially for replacing all kinds of vocal and body gestures. They have the ability to make a message more clear and help the other person in the conversation know what you are precisely feeling like sadness, being mischievous, sincere or sarcastic. On Facebook, you can encounter a number of these emoticons and use them without trouble to liven up all of your Facebook conversations. However, one fact that often leaves the doubt in the mind is, “Where these thousands of free emoticons actually come from?”

It is important to realize that there are two main categories of Facebook emoticons. These include the default Facebook emoticons and the use of external emoticons. In the first category, users have the ability to use Facebook’s own library of emoticons and see the best ones they can use to express themselves with. However, these emoticons are usually hidden and to access them the user must enter the right kind of emoticon code to unlock them. When these smileys are to be used then the easiest way to use is by memorizing the emoticon codes.

The external emoticons in contrast, allow users to use more smileys to express their feelings by allowing you to import other types of applications from many external developers. Thus, users have the advantage from importing smileys from a number of other websites as well. There are also a number of websites available, which offer users the advantage of loading numerous free smileys into the social website. These external sources are usually the extensions for the site. Nevertheless, before downloading these applications you may be first required to download and install the application first. Therefore, it is essential that only the most trusted applications be opened to avoid virus attacks.

Just like Facebook, where companies use Facebook pages to promote their own products, Google has launched the Google + Brand pages for companies. These brand pages provide the perfect platform for companies to interact with potential customers and also help create a good image in the market. Here are ten such tips which could help create better Google plus pages.

1. Firstly create your own Google Brand page. For accessing the Google Brand page go to your Google + profile. From your home page you could access your page.
2. You need to add followers to your circles. You can only add a person to your circle though if your page is already added to his circles.
3. Create a great Google+ Brand page URL that suits your company’s needs. In case you do not like your initial URL which you are given when you created the Google Brand page you can again go to the homepage of your brand to change the URL.
4. As Google plus has lesser customization options than facebook try to keep everything neat and clean. You could remove the unwanted tabs and you could even remove images and images which you think do not suit in with the page profile. For removing the images or videos go to edit profile and select either ‘Photos’ or ‘Videos’ to hide either one or both of them.
5. It is also a great idea to link your Google plus page to your own company website. For connecting to your website, you could use the many G+ buttons or the easy-to-use code that is offered by Google. These can be used to connect your website to Google+. In fact you could also connect to the Google Direct Connect through your website.
6. Another great option in Google plus is that you could lock your posts from further sharing when and if you want. It stops anybody from sharing your shared content any further and the contents can be locked within a specific circle.
7. If your follower count is quite less, you might consider hiding your number of followers. Even this options is provided by Goggle plus. For hiding your number of followers you just need to go to your home page and select ‘Change who is visible here’.
8. Another great tip is to add the important links that are needed to be shown in your page for better brand promotion. For it, you could just go to the about page and click Edit Profile and then on Recommended links.
9. A great way to increase your brand influence is to make use of the concept of Circles in Google plus. Circles are important medium by which one connects in Google plus and you can use them by grouping your followers by interests, locations and other categories.
10. Lastly, you need to have some creativity in your page. You need to be creative with the ’scrapbook photos’ you have so that people would notice them. As photos are what enhance the appeal of your brand page, you need to pay particular attention to them.

Social networking sites are booming. A gigantic percentage of the world’s population is connecting through these online communities each and every day. Most people you know probably are a member of one or more social media networks, and many of those folks most likely connect several times a week, and for many, several times each day.

Privacy, security and safety have become major concerns with social media sites. These networks compete with each other over who has more members, which has more features and also which is the most safe and secure.
It isn’t only the sites that are worried about security. Average users are worried about their safety when using social networks like Facebook, Twitter and Google +. There are a lot of things you can do to stay safe when using these sites, and the following six top safety tips for social media networks are just a handful of ways you can keep yourself safer.

1.) Don’t give out too much information. With too many details about you, identity thieves can have a field day. Via social networks they can easily learn your full name and where you live, but if you have lax privacy settings or overshare, they can also learn your address, phone number, personal email address, place of employment, your previous names, your family members, the type of car you drive, your home town and more. With this information they could fill out a credit card application pretty accurately for you, only being without you social security number and an exact figure for your annual income. Additionally, all this information probably gives a savvy scammer more than enough information to figure out your passwords for various sites.

2.) Don’t broadcast that you won’t be home. Location based networks like Foursquare broadcast that you are out and about, but it doesn’t necessarily meant that no one is home. Bragging via Twitter or Facebook that you are going to be on holiday for the next month often indicates that your home is unguarded. With all the information you intentionally or unintentionally give, your unwatched home is easy to find by a criminal scouting for homes to hit or by your old high school friend who is down on their luck.

3.) Don’t add strangers on sites meant for friends. A site like Facebook can reveal a lot to your friends including your contact information. Adding some random stranger as a friend on a site like that could lead to some sensitive information being leaked. If you like to post personal information don’t add strangers to some sites and protect your posts on others.

4.) Meet people in well-lit public areas. An astounding amount of new relationships now start online, and a lot of those are not from dating sites. Social networks can often lead to new relationships sprouting. If you think you have a love connection or even a new best friend, don’t meet at someone’s home or a remote location for the first meeting. Meet at a restaurant or coffee shop where there are plenty of people who will see both of you, but isn’t too busy so that no one will notice if you end up in trouble.

5.) Manage your privacy settings. Almost all of the social sites have some sort of privacy settings so that you can limit who sees what, and you can even set many of these sites so that you have full control of any information about you. Be sure to review all of these settings, and revisit them anytime these sites upgrade, as these settings may also change too.

6.) Keep your kids away from social networks. There are social sites for kids, but still be sure to monitor them as they use these communities. Sites like Google +, Facebook and Twitter have minimum ages for membership in order to keep kids safe, so make your younger kids wait to join. These sites can put them front and center in front of creeps, dangerous individuals and adult situations, and you probably can’t monitor them and who they interact with constantly. Also, don’t post too much information about your children and avoid using them as your profile pictures, as there is a chance this could also attract unwanted attention.

There are more and more social media sites popping up every day, and it seems like almost everyone who has access to the internet belongs to one or more of these. Some of the most popular sites include Facebook, Twitter, Google +, and LinkedIn. There are also several lesser known sites and those with very specific niche membership.

While every social site is different in many ways, there are some things that they all have in common. Namely, all of these social sites have certain things that you simply should NOT do when you are using them. There are a lot of social network faux pas, but here are the top 5 things you should not do on any social media site.

1.) Overshare (too often). Sure the point of these sites is to share, but don’t overdo it. You will soon be losing fans, followers or whatever that particular network calls them in no time if their feeds are getting clogged with your updates, check-ins, favorite photos and more. What exactly is oversharing differs from site to site, but take a cue from what you see others doing to set the tone.

2.) Overshare (too much). Depending on the site and how public or private it is, there are any number of things that may be TMI or simply information that you shouldn’t be giving out. A public forum like Twitter probably is not the place to be spouting off about how your house will be unattended all week when you are in Aspen, and pretty much every site isn’t the place to post pictures of your baby’s dirty diapers.

3.) Keep your kids away. There are social networks that are fun and safe for kids, and by all means let them use these with your supervision. The regular social networks for adults, however, need to be off limits. Letting your kid use these sites can expose them to predators, creeps and adult situations they simply may not be ready for yet. Additionally, putting information about your kids and their photos front and center on your profiles still exposes your kids to creeps and predators and possibly even situations that no one will ever be ready for. This may sound paranoid, but these are your kids, so it is good to be extra cautious.

4.) Pick an easy password. There are a lot of scammers out there, and there are a shocking number of folks who protect their social media accounts with one of the top 20 most popular passwords. Additionally, a lot of folks pick names of significant others, their kids, their pets and other things that can be far too easy to figure out. If you have an easy password (or one you use for multiple sites), you may end up with some big problems, not only from scammers who may want to pose as you or use your site to send out spam, but from people you know who want to know what you have been saying in your private messages.

5.) Say something that could get you in trouble. There are many different types of trouble, and they all should be avoided. You can get in hot water with employers, coworkers, friends, relatives, strangers, teachers, spouses and more with social network posts and updates. People have lost their jobs, lost their friends and even lost their lives over something that they spouted off about on Facebook or Twitter. That being said, don’t post about things that you shouldn’t be doing because they are against some rules or against the law. Unless you are trying to stir up controversy, don’t say things that are controversial. Don’t advertise that you are slacking off at work or tweeting during a lecture. Don’t use these sites to air someone’s dirty laundry. Arrests, expulsions, divorces, lawsuits and more have come as the result of something carelessly posted on a social site, so please post with thought and with care.

It has been a pretty interesting year for social media. We saw the introduction of Google+, a change which could lead to fundamental differences in the way that search engines work. Facebook introduced Gestures, which could rob the “like” button of its importance when any verb can be transformed into a button.

Twitter solidified as a mainstream platform, reflected by a fourfold increase in advertising costs. Groupon turned out to be slightly overvalued after Facebook retaliated, and augmented reality started to show some promise. Shareable phone apps that exist solely for entertainment were another interesting trend.Looking back on the year, it once again becomes obvious just how much things can change in a short period of time. This begs the question: what’s next? Here are some things we can expect to see in 2012.

The Rise of Social Search

Google has already made some big changes to its search engine. The introduction of the Panda update reduced the effectiveness of several popular SEO tactics. The Google +1 button gives users the ability to tell the search engine whether or not they like a page.

The introduction of Twitter data into the search algorithms was an interesting step, even though Twitter eventually cut off the fire hose of information. The search engine will inevitably mine Google+ for a similar reason. Social shares will influence the search results, but that is just the beginning.
The search results have become increasingly personalized by location and user input. Information collected from Google+ will be used to show users results that they may be more interested. The idea of a universal ranking in the search engines is quickly becoming obsolete.

The Demand for Privacy

Facebook admitted this year that its site tracked users online behavior even after they left the website. They claimed that this was a bug in their system. Whether or not this is the case, this is part of a long list of concerns that people have about privacy and Facebook. With Google+ using user data to influence their search results, and likely their ads, the possibility of a backlash looms for 2012.

While these concerns are unlikely to slow the adoption of social media, they may impact the way that social consumers relate with brands. Social consumers have always been distrustful of brands, and this behavior is likely to intensify. Brands will have to find the right balance between becoming a part of the online conversation without butting in or coming off like an eavesdropper.

The Rise of Social Businesses

The 2011 Pivot Conference revealed the confusion that most businesses still have about social media. Seventy-seven percent claim that they know what their social consumers look like, but only 35 percent can reliably say that they’ve actually asked their consumers what they want from their social engagement with brands.

Fifty percent of businesses said that they would be out of the experimental stage and have a clear social strategy by the end of 2012, while the other half said they would still be in the experimental stage. This either means that half of businesses are overconfident in their strategy or that half of businesses already have a good idea of what a strong social marketing presence looks like. Either way, businesses will need to be well versed in social media in order to succeed by the time this shift takes place.

Mobile Will Surpass the Desktop

Research company Gartner has predicted that 2012 will be the year that Google Apps becomes a viable competitor for Microsoft Office. They believe that social networking applications will be developed for mobile devices before computers, rather than the other way around. Routine use of mobile internet is quickly approaching ubiquity.

There is a good chance 2012 will be even more interesting than the past year. Competition between Facebook and Google+ could result in accelerated change in the industry. What this means for marketing and consumers in general has yet to be seen.

With the excitement around social media it’s only natural for the trade show and exhibition industry to try to find ways to use and adapt it for use. Not only to help promote their stands and posts but also to help engage with other attendees and potential clients. There are an ever increasing number of social media platforms out there and it can be hard to know which ones are worth investing time in. However unless you are working in an industry that is heavily involved in social media it probably safest to stick with platforms that you are comfortable with and you know that your customer base and peers use. Anyway here are some useful ways you can use social media at a trade show or exhibition.
Preshow
If you have a company twitter feed then you can try to build up some excitement pre show. Link to blog posts showing how your brand new exhibition stand is developing; tell people about exclusive offers at the exhibition and interesting people they are likely to meet there. You can ensure that customers and clients alike know where to find you and ensure that they have reasons to visit you. The preshow build up will be most useful if it is combined with other preshow marketing. For example if you are going to do a product launch at the show then you can add teasers to your social media feeds before the show to help build interest and discussions.
During the Show
There are several things you can set up so as to keep engagement going throughout the show.
For example you can:
• Use Foursquare and Gowalla to announce when you have signed into and out of the show.
• Twitter, to liveblog the show for example by letting people know about events, announcements and so on.
• Put QR codes and Microsoft Tags either on your stands or literature so that people can download videos/PDFs or anything else that you want them to have with ease.
• You can use Qik and Audioboo to record video and audio clips live from the show and then put them up for people to see. Got an interview with an industry thought leader or a product demonstration? Then get the video onto Youtube, Facebook and your website within minutes.
• Don’t have business cards? Use Bump and Hashable to exchange contact details quickly and easily. Do have business cards? Use these when you meet the silly people who forgot to bring them! Hashable is particularly useful as you can set up reminders to follow up people.
After the Show

Diversity has been a hallmark of social networking. It has undergone expansion due to the availability of the numerous platforms available for people to communicate and connect with each other. In earlier days, you were largely restricted to your college or work place in order to connect. But not now!

The internet has facilitated many options to connect with your friends and loved ones anytime and from anywhere. You can find your favorite recipes, or get quick gardening tips from the countless web-sites which are easily accessible all the time. Gone are the days when you had to make tiring visits to the endless number of company offices for grabbing the much awaited call letter. The topics and interests on the social networking subject are rich and diverse.
The websites or social sites work as a junction where people from all over the world connect and share their hobbies and interests. There is an online community in social networking. You can also contact others personally and share common ideas. It can help you in enhancing your learning experience, while simultaneously retaining your opinion.

What data reveals

A research estimates that the ad revenue arising out of social networking may reach $5.54 billion worldwide this year. The Facebook and Twitter are two very popular social networking platforms for people across the world. Besides, LinkedIn is another significant social networking site which enables you to be connected to the rest of the world. Interestingly, LinkedIn has supposedly more than tripled its ad revenue in a span of two years. However, there is a decline, as revealed by current trend.
It has been estimated that 6.9 percent of the online ad revenue earned worldwide will go to social networking sites. In the US alone, 8.8 percent of online ad revenue is estimated to be contributed by social sites. Furthermore, by 2013, the contribution of social network ad revenues is supposed to climb up to 9.4 percent worldwide. For the US, estimate is 11.7 percent.

Countries fond of social networking

A study by Experian Hitwise brings out that Brazil and Singapore top other countries (in order) in overall social networking usage. It may be surprising to know that Facebook is not Brazilian’s preferred choice. Brazilians spend most of their time on the Orkut. Orkut occupies 43% of the social networking market share in Brazil. However, it is apparently being over-powered by Facebook. It has been found that last year, Orkut’s contribution reduced by 18 percent while that of Facebook increased by 16 percent. However, if the average is observed, Brazil uses Facebook less than half as long as Singapore. It is only 2/3 as long as the U.S.
It is interesting to know that about 18 percent of Singaporeansswitch directly from one social network to another during their browsing sessions. Hitwise also estimated the length of the average user’s Facebook session around the world. Singapore leads by revealing a record of 38 mins 46 sec session. U.S. has a record of 20 mins 46 sec while Brazil has a record of 18 mins 19 sec.

Most popular sites

The list of the most sought-after networking sites includes Facebook, Twitter, Google +, Ning, MySpace, Orkut and many others. The most popular one is Facebook, according to eBizMBA Rank. It has an estimated 700,000,000 unique visitors in a month. The next one is Twitter with 200,000,000 unique visitors in a month.

Men vs women

The women surpass the men in using social networks to connect with their friends, family and colleagues, according to a survey by Rebtel. Men have more fondness for the voice or phone communication. Even here, however, the difference is quite small. This survey mainly concentrated on factors like expected future use of social media, the habits relating to social media consumption and the general popularity of social media as the choice of U.S. adults, given single mode of communication. According to the finding, 68 percent of women prefer social media to remain connected with their friends as against 54 percent of men.
The social networking sites reveal something more than a trend. There seems to be a primary shift in the way people communicate and interact with each other. It is a revelation of change in lifestyle. The statistics may differ with changed parameters and guidelines, being essentially indicators.

// //

Be it sharing thoughts on an article or showing special photos to close friends and family, social networking buffs always find a reason to stay glued to sites like Facebook that keep them connected day in, day out. After providing people with a great way to communicate with others and an efficient social platform, Facebook has now introduced the new Timeline Profiles as its latest feature addition to enhance the user experience.
The recently released feature enables users to experience a home for all the exciting and interesting stories they have already shared. Adding new stuff now won’t make these stories disappear. Wider than the previous, old profile, the feature-rich Timeline comes integrated with several useful functions. The very foremost thing users will observe is the huge photo right at the top.

The above stated change will be the user’s cover now, providing them with the freedom to decide which of their photos need to be put up there. On scrolling down past the cover, users will see their posts, photos and life events as they took place in time. Users can simply choose what’s featured on their new timeline.
Besides, one can also star their favorites in order to twofold their size or hide things on the whole. However, if some important parts of a particular story are not embraced on the timeline, the user can facilely go back to when they occurred and include them. Another way to do this is to pay a quick visit to the private activity log.
To notify, the private activity log puts forth everything that the user has shared since joined the Facebook. To feature a post on the timeline, one can seamlessly click on any post and share it with friends. Along with the new Timeline profiles, the company has also introduced its latest social application designed to revamp the entire interaction.
The new kind of app allows users to show the things they are fond of on their timeline. By taking advantage of this, users can show the kind of music they like, the recipes they try, and many other such things. Social butterflies can even keep a tab on what their friends are up to.
For those unaware, which appear quite not possible, Facebook is a social networking service that allows users to create a personal profile, exchange messages, add people as friends and stay connected. People are also enabled to join common-interest user groups and categorize their amigos into lists. Some of the highlighting features of the site include Facebook Live, Notifications, News Feed, Status updates, Poke and others.
[slider_ads id=1]

Users can now start adding the newly added Facebook social applications. However, the Timeline by Facebook will take a few more weeks to show its final availability. Once you get the new feature, you can simply go ahead and publish it immediately or review it for a few days to check if anything needs to be added. So, hang onto your hats for the new Facebook Timeline to be available and the whole experience to be leveraged for sure.

Twitter has announced that it will also support Chinese language in the coming weeks. It is important to keep in mind that twitter has been considered the agent of change in many important political events. Ranging from the Arab uprising to the rise of nationalism in a conservative country like Iran. As a result of which it was banned in China. The announcement was made in a research report. The twitter executives have not made any official statement regarding the same.

The confusing Tweet
This step defies any common sense. First of all it represents a softening of stand on the part of Twitter. China is famous for its Great firewall mechanism under which it blocks and censors Internet heavily. In the past few years Google and twitter have vehemently opposed such censorship by the Chinese Government. But after this move, everybody is confused about the twitter’s stand. Since the website is banned in China; this new service won’t be of any help to the users in the mainland.

China has its own Twitter like application that was obviously released to counter the popularity of the former. The Chinese service goes by the name of Sina’s Weibo, which claims to have more than 100 million users in China. The only significance of the move can be read from the angle of Chinese speakers stationed outside of Mainland China. In countries like Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore, there is a significant population speaking Chinese language. The estimated Internet users in this country are around 485 million. This move is clearly against the stoicism, twitter has shown in the past.

The network of revolution
Experts see this move from various angles. Some see it as a measure of capturing the Chinese speaking population spread across the world and outside of the mainland. Some see it as a last ditch attempt to increase the numbers of users. But nobody wants to believe that twitter is selling out under pressure from china. Only time will tell whether this move is an attempt on the twitter side to earn some brownie points and impress Chinese population. China has vehemently opposed any kind of free press and freedom in their country.

The recent spate of Nobel Prize winner Liu Xiabo is fresh in everyone’s memory. Internet has acted as a whip against any kind of censorship, whether it was the fundamentalist of the Arab World, the conservatives of European countries or the Communists of China. It would be interesting to see how it plays out between twitter and china in the future, but is sure that twitter sees itself as the arbiter of free speech and free thought and China is the very antithesis of it. The internet community has reserved their reaction for the time as everyone is waiting for twitters new move. Chinese officials have also refused to comment on the issue, their previous tiff with Google is still a fresh in people’s mind. But one thing is certain that twitter have surely emerged as one of the big players in this arena.

//
//

Should you put your twitter handle on your business card? If clients can contact you through five or six different networks, which one should they choose? The rise of social media means that it is great way to communicate but also that the boundaries between private and business life have become more blurred than ever. Of course different social media tools have different purposes. So here are some guidelines on different tools and whether you should put them on your card.

Facebook: Quite simply why would you? If you want a clients to see that you have a Facebook presence then use a company page rather than your personal one for business contacts. This is partly for privacy reasons and partly for professional reasons. After all I doubt you want to see your client’s baby photo’s every time you log on!

Twitter: This depends a lot on both your business and your twitter usage. For example if you work for a technology company and tweet on new developments within the industry then it’s a great way to network with your clients and show your expertise. On the other hand if you are working in banking and mainly tweet about how drunk you got last night then it might not be such a great idea. In other words, consider whether you want you twitter account to be part of your larger business persona and act appropriately.
//
//
Linkedin: Comes with your email address of course, but is worth putting on your card as well, just as a reminder. Particularly if your work is B2B as it offers a great way to stay in touch with professional clients.

Bebo & Myspace: Are they still alive? Either way you don’t want to put them on your card unless you wish to look like a teenager from around 2005. You may have been a teenager then, but you aren’t now.

Google+: If you really wanted to put your personal Facebook account on your card then a Google+ account will probably work better. For one thing you can put clients into different ‘circles’ meaning that you can ensure the information you share is appropriate to who sees it. Plus it is still early enough (2011) that adopting Google+ will make you look cutting edge to anyone who isn’t involved in the web industry. The disadvantage is that it is still early enough that there aren’t many people actually on it.

With Facebook crossing the mark of 750 million users, everyone has started taking social networking sites very seriously. Right from a sales professional to business tycoons, everyone has an account on Facebook, wherein he or she log in daily once for a while. Here they get new people to meet, find old friends and communicate, share and enjoy company together. Thus at one end when people are finding new friends, companies too are getting clients from these places and freelancers searching for various jobs too are able to make handsome money. At such a juncture, when every Tom, Dick and Harry has his account, how come people like designers afford to stay away from social media? Moreover, they have millions of opportunity to learn and earn from social networking sites. Here how you as a Graphic designer can benefit from social networking sites like Facebook:

· Makes your presence felt over Internet: Making your presence felt online is an important thing which you as a designer should consider. This is significant since it is a place where you dwell the most in finding new clients, applying for jobs and looking for network. Internet is a place where you can create a good image of yours which can actually help you build a rapport with new people and converting them into your client.

· Takes you in a design network: You as a designer understand the significance of joining any group of graphic designers online. There are number of such places where graphic designers meet, huddle and discuss work and have good time. Find them out, and be an active member in it. Here you get chance to upload your work, and thus can market yourself. In this way you find new people in your network, thus find clients to get more work.

· Portray your work: Put your designs and the project your are currently working with. In this way, you are able to showcase your skills and talents before the prospective clients along with the kind of project you have handled in the past. It may impress with the kind of your work or project you handle thus allowing them to reach you for work.

· Collect feedback and comments to improve: There is always a room for improvement even you call yourself perfect. However, you should be open to see your work and designs through other’s critical perspective are a must for personal growth. So never shy away from getting feedback from various designers in your network. Moreover, the interesting part of social media is you will often find feedback without even asking for it.

· Always be open to learn new things from others: Once you are in a network of designers, you are supposed to get feedback and comments from them. Check their work and note the way they have worked on various projects. Try learning things from them which you don’t know.

Social networking, often seen simply as a way for friends to keep in touch, has been pounced upon by big corporations and institutions, who understand the value of being seen as “your friendly motor manufacturer”, or something to that effect. A sector where this can be even more valuable is the small independent retailer, including the very small “Mom and Pop” shops.

Twitter, Facebook and YouTube come to mind as easy ways for these small shops to make themselves known, especially in their local areas. The ease with which a business can set up an account with each of these networks makes it a very attractive proposition.

Take, for example, a Toy Store run by a husband and wife in a small town. They sell traditional wooden toys, educational toys and teddy bears, all from well-known manufacturers. They have a website, but don’t do an awful lot of business through it because of the problems of stock control.
They don’t have many standard lines that they keep in large quantities, so if they sell out of an item in the shop, that someone orders online, then they are embarrassed to have to give a refund to the online customer, if they can’t replenish quickly from the supplier. Even one or two out-of-stock items from a large order can give rise to a bad reputation following customer feedback.This is where Twitter can help. If they sign up for one, or perhaps several accounts, they can build up relationships with all sorts of groups, both local and national. Suppose they suddenly receive a surprise shipment of sought-after teddy bears, they could send a quick tweet to their local teddy fans who would hot-foot it round to the shop. Everyone’s happy.

With Facebook they could start a fan pagewhere they could keep their followers either locally, nationally or globally, in touch with their special offers. That way, they could carry a relatively small range of standard products on their website, that they could guarantee to keep well stocked, to service their online customers’ needs.

There are plentiful opportunities to get well known on YouTube. A toyshop could make short video clips of “talking” toys or animations with, say, dancing princes, knights, horses – the possibilities are endless for potential viral clips. These videos would have links back to the shop’s website, where the products could be ordered.
//
//
The social networks would help the name and the reputation of the shop to spread, particularly through such uses as tweeting followers in groups like NetMums or Steiff Collectables. They could establish themselves as the “go to” Facebook page for toy safety advice or become the experts to search for on YouTube, or the people to tweet with urgent toy related questions.
